Historical background

Star-driven blockbusters dominated much of the output of nineties cinema. Multiplexes became firmly established in shopping centres and retail parks across the UK through the expansion of the Odeon and new Cineworld chains. Many of the longer lasting cinemas like The Regal in Wymondham and The ABC/Cannon on Prince of Wales Road, Norwich finally closed unable to compete. Despite this new independent and arthouse cinemas and films found their own audience. Picturehouse opened its first cinema in 1989 and expanded throughout the 90s and edgy and arthouse films including those by David lynch crossed over into the mainstream.
